They knew nothing of agriculture or livestock farming, had no laws or authority, wore poorly treated animal skins and ate whatever they could gather or hunt. Families lived in isolation and violence was commonplace as everyone acted according to their own will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"translation-block\">Seeing this situation from the heights of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wiratrips.com\/en\/tres-mundos-andinos\/\" title=\"Hanan Pacha\" target=\"_self\">Hanan Pacha<\/a><\/em> (the world above), the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wiratrips.com\/en\/inti-el-dios-sol\/\" title=\"Dios Inti\" target=\"_self\">God Inti<\/a><\/strong> took pity on them. He decided that humanity needed guidance and instruction in order to live in an orderly manner with respect and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f59b666b\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">\u2600\ufe0f The dispatch of the children of the Sun<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wiratrips.com\/en\/inti-el-dios-sol\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\">Inti<\/a><\/strong> chose two of his sons to carry out this mission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Manco C\u00e1pac<\/strong>, who was strong, wise and courageous and a bearer of royal authority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mama Ocllo<\/strong>, who was beautiful, wise and patient. She was knowledgeable about the secrets of weaving, child-rearing and domestic organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The two were husband and wife, and Inti sent them to Earth, emerging from the sacred waters of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peru.travel\/es\/atractivos\/lago-titicaca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"lago Titicaca\">Lake Titicaca<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 a place considered by the peoples of the highlands to be the cradle of life. They carried a magical golden rod in their hands, which would serve as a sign to indicate the location of the future heart of a great empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Before leaving, <a href=\"https:\/\/wiratrips.com\/en\/inti-el-dios-sol\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\">Inti<\/a> gave them an order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-container-core-quote-is-layout-8a368f38 wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"Go north. Where this rod sinks without resistance, there you will found a city that will be the navel of the world.\u201d From there, you will rule and teach people how to live. Tell them that you are my children, and that they must obey you as they obey me.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-2a3e9373\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">\ud83c\udf04 The journey to Cusco<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"translation-block\">Manco C\u00e1pac and Mama Ocllo began their journey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peru.travel\/es\/atractivos\/lago-titicaca\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Titicaca\" target=\"_self\">Titicaca<\/a> to the north, crossing mountains, rivers, and valleys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">In each place they passed through, they gathered the inhabitants and explained their mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Manco C\u00e1pac<\/strong> taught the men how to make tools, grow corn, domesticate camelids and construct sturdy dwellings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">It is said that they made <strong>ceremonial stops<\/strong> along the way to worship Inti and give thanks for light, warmth, and life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"translation-block\">It is said that along the way they made <strong>ceremonial stops<\/strong> to worship <a href=\"https:\/\/wiratrips.com\/en\/inti-el-dios-sol\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\">Inti<\/a>, giving thanks for light, warmth, and life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b486b52c\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">\ud83c\udfaf The sign of the golden rod<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">During the journey, Manco C\u00e1pac tested the golden rod at various locations. If the ground was hard, they continued onwards. After a long journey, they arrived at the fertile Huatanay River valley. There, when he stuck the topayauri into the ground, it sank until it disappeared completely. This was an unmistakable sign from Inti: this place would be the centre of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">At that point, Manco Capac ordered the construction of a great city: <strong>Qosqo<\/strong> (Cusco), meaning 'navel' or 'centre' in Quechua. From there, they would rule over neighbouring peoples and spread their culture, laws and worship of the sun. He glosses over conflicts and presents a pure lineage ordained by the sun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-892fac3b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">\ud83d\udcdc Version by Juan Diez de Betanzos<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Summa and Narrative of the Incas, 1551\u20131557)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Betanzos presents a <strong>less idealised version that is closer to the original oral tradition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His account of the journey and the episodes experienced by the characters is more detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-3a5e2724\"><h4 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Key points<\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-9d559ace\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Origin<\/h5><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Manco C\u00e1pac and Mama Ocllo are sent by Inti from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peru.travel\/es\/atractivos\/lago-titicaca\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Titicaca\" target=\"_self\">Lake Titicaca<\/a>. In certain cases, Manco C\u00e1pac uses cunning, while in others he uses <strong>force and threats<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-5cba6d05\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Journey<\/h5><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>More active than in Garcilaso's account, as he not only teaches, but also negotiates with communities and helps devise strategies to convince them to accept the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-33a703c6\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Foundation of Cusco<\/h5><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The golden rod sinks into the exact spot designated by the Sun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Not only does Manco C\u00e1pac found the city, he also <strong>subjugates the nearby towns<\/strong> to consolidate his power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-9047f0ab\"><h5 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Tone and purpose<\/h5><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While recognising the civilising mission, Betanzos does not hide the use of power, the resistance of some towns and the mixture of mythological versions.
